  • Source of power: 4 horses.
  • Horses are used for: all field work including plowing, harrowing, cultivating, potato hilling, mowing, spreading manure, hay making; wagon work including harvesting; general woods work.
  • Acreage: 63; 7 in cultivation of market garden crops.
  • Other livestock: sheep, chickens.
  • Skills offered in: draft horse care and basic teamster skills; involvement in nearly all aspects of the farm, especially market garden, harvesting, soil management, cover cropping, marketing through CSA, general construction, livestock management, start-up considerations. This is a general apprenticeship in diversified sustainable draft-horse powered market garden and livestock production. Areas of special interest include integration of market crops, cover crops, forage crops, and livestock. Direct marketing, rustic simple living.
  • Work hours: 10-11 hrs/day, 5 1/2 days/wk.
  • Terms: room and board in exchange for learning and work; 2-3 internships positions March through Christmas.
  • Stipend: $600/month plus $50 bonus/month.
  • Accommodations: simple one-room rustic cabins, all food staples are provided including basic organic kitchen staples and all-you-can-eat farm produce; some meals are shared, some are independent.
  • Apprentice must have: energy, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude; flexibility and openness; a serious interested in farming; an eagerness to learn; hardiness to rustic living and physically demanding work; patience, honesty, and a commitment to communication.
