Clover Horse Powered Farm, Vernon Horney, 5265 New Haven Circle, Morganton, NC 28655, 828-584-1654, . We have a small farming market garden. We do haying and grow grain, log, and train horses. I have worked horses and mules all my life.

  • Source of power: 4 horses, tractor.
  • Horses are used for: everything but run the baler and combine.
  • Acreage: 30; 3-5 in garden, 8-10 crops, 8 pasture, 7-10 hay; always renting more acres.
  • Other livestock: chickens, goats, beef cow, hog.
  • Skills offered in: farming with horses and tractors, managing land for maximum production, composting and organic technology, harness repair and building, riding when we have time, making do with what you have in cases where the money isn't there to work with.
  • Work hours: 30-60 hrs/wk; 5-12 hrs/day; we may work hard this week and be more laid back next, but you will learn.
  • Terms: room and board; 2 or 3 apprentices at a time, early spring or late winter preferred.
  • Stipend: yes.
  • Accommodations: camper and cabin, regular meals with family.
  • Apprentice must be: honest; willing to learn and work when needed; respectful of family and customers.
  • Visit first: if apprentice desires.
  • Trial period: 2 weeks; we can work around trial period if placement is needed for school.

  • Source of power: 3 horses, 1 pony, tractor.
  • Horses are used for: fieldwork, making hay, low impact logging.
  • Acreage: 32; 3 in crops; woodlot managed for firewood, saw timber, wildlife; plus an addition leased 8-acre hay field.
  • Other livestock: chickens.
  • Skills offered in: driving and safely handling horses, organic vegetable production, sorghum production, horse logging, sawmill operations, construction.
  • Work hours: 8 hrs/day, 5 days/wk.
  • Terms: room; occasional family-style shared meals, otherwise apprentices are responsible for cooking own meals; 2 apprentices at a time, dates by arrangement, 2 weeks minimum, 2 years maximum.
  • Stipend: possible, depending on length of stay and season.
  • Accommodations: housing in cabin.
  • Apprentice must: motivated to work and learn, enthusiastic and willing to try most farm jobs; apprentices are encouraged to be independent in making decisions and accomplishing tasks as skills develop.
