We grow vegetables for our on-farm restaurant. We also raise cows, pigs, ducks, and geese for the Ottawa restaurant market. We have been working horses for five years.

  • Source of power: 2 horses.
  • Horses are used for: logging; discing and cultivating the gardens; general help around the farm.
  • Acreage: 200; 99 in woodlot, 100 tillable—1 in garden, 40 in pasture, 60 in hay.
  • Other livestock: cows, pigs, ducks, geese.
  • Skills offered in: field work, organic vegetable production, driving, logging, riding, and carpentry.
  • Work hours: 8-10/day, 6 days/wk.
  • Terms: room and board furnished; one apprentice at a time for a minimum of one month, any time of year.
  • Stipend: yes.
  • Accommodations: second floor of pavilion with nice view of the farm; home cook meals.
  • Apprentice must be: hard working, honest, reliable, non-smoking, happy to share farm chores.
  • Visit first: if desired.
  • Trial period: 2 weeks.

Certified organic farm producing grain crops, vegetables (CSA), registered Suffolk Punch draft horses. We are part of CRAFT Ontario (Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training), a network of organic farms in southern Ontario that have apprentices who get together once a month from May to October at different farms for a tour, seminar, and work project—thus broadening the apprenticeship experience and offering an opportunity to socialize with other apprentices.
Orchard Hill Farm
  • Source of power: 8 Suffolks, limited use of tractor.
  • Horses are used for: most of the work, including hauling logs and firewood, spreading compost, plowing, discing, cultivating, planting, row cultivation, mowing and raking hay, hay and sleigh rides.
  • Acreage: 80; 5 acres in vegetables for 100 family CSA, the remainder in grain, hay, pasture, and Christmas trees.
  • Other livestock: a few chickens and composting pigs.
  • Skills offered in: working with horses, farming organically.
  • Work hours: 8-10 hrs/day, 40-60 hrs/wk.
  • Terms: room & board; 3 apprentices at a time.
  • Stipend: yes.
  • Accommodations: in family home; hardy meals made mostly from home-grown produce, vegetarians accommodated.
  • Apprentice must: be eager to learn about horses and farming, and help out with various farm jobs according to the season, including planting, cultivating, harvesting, haying, and plowing.
  • Visit first: optional.
  • Trial period: 2 weeks.
