Apprentices learn how to make a livelihood from logging with horses. They have the opportunity to become involved with each step of a rough cut lumber business through direct experience, learning techniques for felling, limbing, bucking, skidding, sawing, stacking, and selling rough cut lumber, while gaining the confidence to utilize these skills on their own.
  • Source of power: 2 Fjord geldings, 2 Suffolk mares, 24 horses on Wood-Mizer saw, Bobcat.
  • Horses are used for: logging, harrowing, hauling bales and firewood, other basic farm duties.
  • Skills offered in: general duties involved with 2-3 person logging camp—felling, limbing, skidding, bucking, decking, sawing, lumber piling; involvement with marketing and horse use depends on apprentice; appreciation of local flora and fauna.
  • Work hours: vary with season and activities at hand.
  • Terms: room & board; mostly October through May, but some in summer; 1 apprentice at a time, 2 months minimum.
  • Stipend: possible.
  • Accommodations: in family home.
  • Apprentice must: eager to learn, physically able, adaptable.
  • Visit first: no.
  • Trial period: one week.
