Tools and Materials

Each student is required to provide their own hand tools and text book. School owned anvils and forges are availble for use at all times while students are enrolled. If you are enrolled in the Advanced Journeyman Farrier courses, you will need two text books. These books are The Principles of Horseshoeing, 3rd edition (P3) by Dr. Doug Butler, PhD, CJF, FWCF, and Hickmans' Farriery by John Hickman, FWCF and Martin Humphrey. If you are enrolled in the first or last Practical Farrier course, you will need Dr. Butler's book, and if you are in the second Practical Farrier course of the year you will need Hickmans' book.

Following is a list of the required tools, and suggested brand names. You are not required to have the suggested brands, however, the suggested brands are listed due to their quality, and not their price. You will never be sorry for buying quality.

If you are enrolled in the Advanced Farrier course or the Journeman Farrier Course, you will need some additional tools. Practical Farrier course students are encouraged to buy the additional tools, but they are not required. These are:

Farrier suppliers are located all over the country. Most of them will have all of the items mentioned. Contact if you need any help finding a farrier supply in your area.

The initial tools should cost between $800 and $1,050 depending on where you purchase them. The additional tools required for the lolnger courses should run $250.
