Mule allergic to flys
Posted by connie at 2008-08-17 19:11:24
Sometime ago my husband wrote in and someone answered him with a old remedy to help this. But I can't find it.My mule is allergic to flys and scratches her self till she is raw.

Any suggestions are more then welcomed.
I have full fly sheet and mask on her and now she is scratching her legs up.I call her my night because she is in iniform.I also have her on dexameazone every two weeks she gets 8cc ordered by the vet. Please if you know anything that would stop this please let me know. Thanks so much.

Have a horse that is allergic. Keep him in the barn when flies are the worst.Spray with a good fly spray often. Sprayed on iodine where flies had bitten at least once a day.If really bad our vet recommended a iodine wash. We did not use dex and have him pretty well cleared up. Don't like to use dex much as it is addictive and should not be used very long.He is a 3 yr old and did not show signs until this year and luckily we caught him early. The iodine seems to repel the flies as good as fly sprays.

I have an equine catalog somewhere in the file but could not lay my hands on as I write this. There is a company who sells animal grade garlic. My cousin uses it all the time his wife said that she feeds 2 table spoons a day and the flys do not land on their horses. She said that they sprinkle it around the out side of the hay rack where the pinic food is at noon on their rides and the flys do not come around. May be someone else has hear of this. I need to get to work this morning but tonight I look it up and post it. carl

I did forget to mention in my earlier post that we do feed garlic and have been using it with this horse. He is healing and pretty much over the problem but seem we have to keep after it or he gets more bites.I had a lady tell me that she had problems with one of her horses. She sold the horse because of the problem.I do think that the garlic helps with flies and worms but like everything else,it is not the total answer.
