rear axle locked up in gear or out will go backwards any ideas?

If you have not figured it out, here are a couple of ideas.

Jack up each side to see which side is the offender. There are one way dogs on the side that drives the beaters, so I would probably start on that side. There is something that is binding on forward motion that releases when travelling backward. Bearing on that side? Twine?

Take photos as you take apart so you know how to put back together. You will find what ever it is and the disassembly will allow you to clean out years of old grease and dirt and pack with fresh lubricant.

is the speader full?mine locks up when i have the floor chains in gear and the beaters out of gear,then i get the pitch fork out and unlock the wheels

Sounds like the axle is bound and the dogs are allowing it to back up. Time to start a tear down to find the problem.
