Cottonseed contains a substance called gossypol which is toxic to horses as it damages the kidneys. The substance can be inactivated by heat treatment so you need to know the source. Cottonseed is also subject to heavy spray contamination as it is a very heavily sprayed crop. Proceed with caution.

I remember reading its poison for horses and the one occasion I had with a trace ammount in the grain the horse would not touch that grain. Cows... I dont know.

Cottonseed meal is a supplemental protein commonly used in horse diets. It is low in lysine, but when the diet is fortified with lysine, young horse will grow as fast and efficiently as those fed diets with soybean meal. There is the potential of gossypol toxicity when feeding cottonseed meal.

A few years ago in New South Wales here in Australia where my mate has been in drought since 2002 he was feeding cotton seed to his cattle...I think he was giving it to the horse too, there was nothing and still isn't anything to feed

It is common around here to feed cattle the left over from the cotten gin. Mr Whitten fed it for years until his farm started growing condoes.
