drying down milk
Posted by wally b at 2008-08-20 21:29:58
I have a cow I'm milking. I want to dry her excess milk (ie powder dry) so I can add it to feed grain for protein suppliment for my chickens. Any idea how to do this or is it possible?

If I remember correctly, The commercial folks use a vacumn oven. First, defat the milk completely. I think they use some additive like acetone to separate the fat from the milk and then vacumn distill it out. Then spray into a heated chamber that is under a partial vacumn so that the water flashes from the milk soilds without leaving a burnt taste to the milk.
Or you could just mix it with corn and feed it wet.

You need a vaceum pump so it will boil at a far lower temp. Sort of a dicey job requiring a lot of detail.
Why not feed the milk as a liquid? Works fine.

My Mother used to feed her chickens "clabbered" milk. She would let the skimmed milk sour in a pail for a day or so, depending on the heat factor. Then feeding the "cottage cheese" to the chickens. Maybe the texture was easier for them to consume.
