Tying a rope mule halter
Posted by Harvey Seidel at 2008-08-26 17:50:23
Some time ago I saw a video on RFD TV where Edwards tied a really great rope halter out of a length of rope. I have since lost the directions. Any help out there?

I've got it recorded on my DVR Your welcome to come over and watch it. I don't think I could explain it. Otherwise you can keep your eyes on RFD TV They will frequently rerun episodes.

I didn't see the demo, but I bought a book called Halter-tying success by Diane Lognanecker (Found it in RH). I have made a bunch of them using the book. Even taught a bunch of Mexican Vaqueros to do it using the book. I couldn't speak Spanish and they couldn't speak Gringo. The illustrations in the book overcame our language problem.

Also search online How To Tie A Rope Halter for videos and other info.

Mooney, I had it on my DVR too and the DVR went bad so lost it all. That is the problem. I have the DVR set to record all RFD rural heritage stuff, but don't know when that will come again. It was a good halter and cured a lot of issues on horses that won't lead.

Thanks for the lead on the book by Longnanecker. I called Edwards but he wouldn't tell me how to do it said I had to buy the video...smile. Anyone out there have it and want to describe how to do it, I sure would try and learn.

Don't know if it's still active, but there was a site showing one method of tying halters and how to adjust for different sizes. Googled 'tied halters' to find it.

Persistence in finding something pays off. Here is a u tube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlSsuwOSm3I
Directions are as follows. Tie a close bowline around the neck up close to the throatlatch, making the loop snug; take the rope under the jaw and over the nose and again, under the jaw and over the nose, take the first loop that went under the jaw and over the nose, grab that loop from the top of the nose and over the top of the 2nd loop and up over the pole of the horse. Adjust the halter.

Excellent simple and very effective. Not a halter to tie a horse with but one that works for teaching leading and control.

You can order the video from this website. It's titled 'Communicating With Mules'

I believe you are referring to what Steve Edward calls his com-a-long hitch, and not a standard tied rope halter
