Effect on heart muscle with EPSM
Posted by Caryl at 2008-05-13 23:56:10
I havent posted for a while but recently attended a lecture at Ohio vet conference on EPSM. They presented info about a possible connection with severe EPSM horses and not only skeletal muscle problems but also cardiac muscle. I had Masons heart ultrasounded and it seemed fine. What is your experience with this. Have you ever though the heart muscle could be affected?
Thanks so much,
Caryl

Good question. I have only seen 1 case where heart muscle had lesions of EPSM, and there is one other that I know of in the veterinary literature. There was no indication of heart dysfunction, though, at least not that anyone could detect. So I believe that the evidence at this point does not suggest that cardiac problems are likely to occur in EPSM horses. It is certainly worth a good study, though, and perhaps this is what the Ohio conference speaker will be doing.
