Rural Heritage Magazine

Since 1976, Rural Heritage magazine has been telling stories about people using draft animal power on their farms and homesteads. We promote sustainable, back-to-the-land living and show how folks can succeed using tools and techniques of the past to meet the challenges of the present day. Market gardening, restorative forestry, vintage equipment maintenance and repair and regenerative agriculture are all topics regularly covered in Rural Heritage.

Our contributors do this kind of work every day and so are uniquely qualified to provide do-it-yourself projects, advice and insights about their experiences. Whether you are halter-breaking your colt, riving shingles for your barn, planting cover and companion crops, or even learning to tie a specific knot, we’ve got you covered in Rural Heritage. Our readers are primarily small-scale farmers and homesteaders or folks hoping to make the transition to that kind of lifestyle. They also include people who remember the old ways and enjoy learning about people doing that work today.  Published six times a year, each issue has 108 color pages and includes advertisements of hard-to-find businesses related to draft animal power and homesteading.
