Stories in this issue:

  • Barns on the Move for Horses and Hogs: John Coley describes his experiments with skid barns for both hogs and draft horses and mules.  John describes the construction and all the thoughts that went into their designs as well as changes they made after putting them into use.
  • Pack Saddle Building: Jerry Hicks continues his project of replicating pack saddle design used in the 18th century homesteading days. In this installment he attaches the frame to the saddle and the saddle to the horse
  • Facing Problems with Soil Health in Mind: Jenifer Morrissey writes about addressing the root problems in soil health rather than the symptoms.  Morrissey goes to several farmers and soil scientists who are doing just that to explain how they are improving the health of their soil without chemicals or disturbing the soil.
  • A Sweeping Succes at Horse Progress Days: Ralph Rice writes about small farmers helping each other to build a community of successful farms.  He likens it to the eight-horse drawn sweep that powered the sawmill at Horse Progress Days, horses, teamsters and machines working together to help get a job done.
  • Cowboys and Indians: Dick Courteau continues his story from high school graduation to venturing West alone, looking for work with horses.  He ends up on a ranch and gives us some nuggets of wisdom from his experiences there.
  • 2021 Summer Suffolk Gathering: Suffolk teamsters and breeders gather for their annual event to promote this wonderful draft horse breed.
  • Tales from Carter County – Old Lily: Jerry Hicks tells the tale of an old Percheron and the couple who thought they could handle her.
  • Midwest Ox Drovers Association Gathering: Notes from a question and answer session with expert teamsters Dick Roosenberg, Luke Conner, Rob Burdick, Bill Speiden, and Vicki Solomon
  • Horse Progress Days Field Equipment
  • Horse Progress Days Seminar: Horse Health
  • Horse Progress Days Seminar: Pond Management
  • Horse Progress Days Seminar: Maple Syruping
  • Horse Progress Days Seminar: Logging
  • Horse Progress Days Seminar: Horses and the Amish
